DIY Sew a Pillowcase: A Guide for Beginners

Sewing your own pillowcase is a great way to add a personal touch to your home decor. With a bit of patience and the right supplies, you can easily create your own custom pillowcases. This guide is designed with beginners in mind, and provides step-by-step instructions that will help you sew your pillowcase in no time.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Fabric
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Measuring tape
  • Iron

Step 1: Measuring and Cutting the Fabric

Start by measuring the length of your pillow. The standard measurements for a pillowcase are 20 inches by 30 inches. Cut the fabric according to the measurements, leaving an extra inch of fabric for the seams.

Step 2: Pre-treating the Fabric

Using an iron, pre-treat the fabric by pressing it and steaming it until smooth. This will help the fabric maintain its shape while you’re sewing.

Step 3: Sewing the Seams

Once the fabric is ready, start pinning one side of the fabric together. You can either use a straight stitch or a zigzag stitch. Start at one end, and stitch all the way down the side. Do the same for the other side.

Step 4: Folding the Pillowcase

Now it’s time to fold the pillowcase. Fold the fabric inwards so that the right sides are facing each other. Line up the raw edges, and pin them together. Starting at one end, sew a straight stitch or a zigzag stitch all the way to the other side.

Step 5: Finishing the Pillowcase

Turn the pillowcase inside out and press it with an iron for a neat and professional finish. Stitch a decorative pattern of your choice with a contrasting color thread on the edges. And voila! You have successfully sewn your own pillowcase.
