How to Make DIY Candle Wicks at Home

Making your own DIY candle wicks can be a fun and economical way to jumpstart your candlemaking. Not only can you create a unique, personalized wick for any type of candle you might need, but you can also save on overall candle-making costs. Here are some simple and creative ideas for making your own candle wicks.

Making a Candle Wick from String or Yarn

One common and inexpensive option for making a candle wick uses everyday string or yarn. All you need is some string or yarn, scissors, and a metal or wood wick holder or nut. The type of string or yarn you choose will depend on the size of your candle and the look you’re going for. Cut two lengths of the string, making sure each length is at least an inch longer than the candle you’ll be using. Tie one end of each length together, faster with a double or square knot. Trim off any excess string hanging off the knot. To make the wick holder or nut, use a hammer and nail to make a hole in one end of the wood or metal piece. Feed the two string ends through the hole, adjusting them so that the knot is centered. Trim any excess string that may be sticking out on either end. And you’re done!

Making a Candle Wick Using Hemp Twine

Hemp twine is a great option for making a candle wick. It’s easy to work with and has a more rustic, natural look if you’re going for that. For hemp twine, you’ll just need a spool of twine and scissors. Cut the twine in lengths that are twice the height of the jar or container you’ll be using. Feed the two strings through the hole, adjusting them so that they are centered and the ends are even. Then twist the two strings together and fasten the knot by wrapping the remaining end of the cord around the knot a couple times. Trim away the excess twine from the knot and you’re ready to go.

Making a Candle Wick from Cotton Cloth

A great way to make a candle wick from a cotton cloth is to use an old cotton T-shirt or other fabric. All you need is scissors, a ruler, and a spool of thread. Start by measuring the length of the candle you’ll be using. Add an inch to that measurement and cut the T-shirt or fabric into a strip that length plus one inch for the knot. Now cut the strip into three equal parts. Take one of the three pieces and make a knot in the middle, then thread the two ends through the hole in the wick holder or nut. Adjust the ends so that the knot is in the center. To make sure that the wick is secure, wrap the thread around the knots a few times. Then cut away the excess fabric and thread. And you’re done!
