How to Make Low‐Protein Dog Food

Making low-protein dog food at home is a great way to provide your pup with nutritious meals while controlling the amount of protein in their diet. Low-protein diets are often recommended for dogs with kidney, heart, and liver diseases. To make your own low-protein dog food, put together a balanced diet from meat, grains, vegetables, and supplements.

Ingredients

The following ingredients are necessary to make low-protein dog food:

  • Lean ground beef or boneless chicken breast
  • Whole-grain top-cut oats
  • Green beans
  • Canned pumpkin
  • Vitamins and minerals

Instructions

Follow these steps to make homemade low-protein dog food:

  1. Steam or boil the lean ground beef or chicken until it is cooked through. Drain and set aside to cool.
  2. Cook the top-cut oats in boiling water until it is soft, about 10 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  3. Steam or boil the green beans until they are softened. Drain and set aside.
  4. Mix the cooked meats, grains, and vegetables together in a large bowl.
  5. Add in the canned pumpkin for additional fiber.
  6. Stir the entire mixture until it is evenly blended.
  7. Spoon an appropriate portion for your pup into a food bowl.
  8. For additional nutrition, add vitamins and minerals as per the instructions on the supplement label or as recommended by your vet.
  9. Store remaining food in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to one week.

Tips

  • Make sure all ingredients are cooled down before mixing them together for your pup.
  • If your pup’s food is too dry, add a few tablespoons of warm water to help it all mix together.
  • Always consult your veterinarian before making any changes to your pup’s diet.
