DIY Ghillie Suit in 10 Steps

Make your own camouflage suit with a ghillie suit for various activities such as hunting and paintball. Follow these simple steps to craft an effective ghillie suit that will blend in with the environment.

Materials

  • 1 military poncho
  • Heavy duty thread in foliage colors
  • Needle
  • Paintbrushes
  • Camo paints
  • Wooden dowels
  • Square or round wooden sticks
  • Jute twine
  • Camo fabric
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Moss or Spanish moss

Instructions

  1. Lay the military poncho out flat and with heavy duty thread in the foliage colors, sewing the colored threads to tie Moss or Spanish moss for added camouflage.
  2. Grab the camo paints, paintbrushes, and wooden dowels. Dip the wooden dowel into the paint, then drag it across the front and back of the suit. Paint splotches of the colors to resemble foliage and using the small round or square wooden sticks to form a leaf shape in addition to adding depth to your ghillie suit.
  3. Using jute twine, sew camo fabric to the poncho. Make sure the fabric covers everything and is sewed on securely.
  4. Continue to add Moss or Spanish moss to your suit for added camouflage.
  5. Wear gloves, safety glasses to avoid injury, and carefully secure twigs and leaves onto the ghillie suit for an added layer of camouflage.
  6. Using the needle, string a few pieces of jute onto each twig and leaf.
  7. Carefully tie the leaves and twigs to poncho using jute twine.
  8. Lastly, check the suit for any areas where foliage is sparse. If need be, add a few more leaves and twigs before deer hunting or outdoor activities.
  9. Put on the ghillie suit and enjoy.
