How to Make a DIY Disco Ball Out of Recycled CDs

Looking for a fun, creative way to add some sparkle to your next festive gathering? Get recycling and turn your old CDs into a DIY glimmering disco ball! All you need are some spare CDs, a pair of scissors, and a mirror ball! Here's how to turn your spare CDs into a dazzling statement piece.

Step 1: Prepare Your CDs

Carefully examine the CDs and pick out any that are scratched, chipped, or broken. These are no longer usable and the uneven pieces won't create the neat disco ball shape. With the usable CDs left, use a pair of scissors to trim off the spindles from the centers. This will leave you with 8-pointed circular CD pieces that you'll use to create the disco ball elements.

Step 2: Arrange the CDs Around the Mirror Ball

To begin setting up the disco ball, place the mirror ball in the center on a flat surface or elevate it for a better view. Now, organize the CDs around the mirror ball and ensure no two points are overlapping. Hold each piece in place and maneuver it until you’re pleased with your design. You might want to arrange the CDs with alternating colors or go for something different.

Step 3: Attach the CDs to the Mirror Ball

When you’re happy with the arrangement of the CDs, it’s time to attach them to the mirror ball. Use adhesive glue to secure each CD to the mirror ball. Make sure to not leave any gaps between each CD piece. Once the adhesive has dried, you should have a neat shell of CD pieces around the mirror ball.

Step 4: Shine Some Light on It!

  • Set the stage by dimming the lights or add some black light LED strips for a neat effect.
  • Hang the disco ball from the ceiling using fishing line or some twine.
  • For a spin, you'll need a motor for the disco ball. Hang it from the ceiling with the mirror ball and turn it on for a complete rotating disco ball!

You now have your very own homemade disco ball that you can proudly share with your friends and family. With a little bit of creativity and some recycled materials, you can make your own custom disco ball that will be the star of your next gathering.
