Repotting Your Snake Plants

When you first bring home your new snake plant, you may be eager to repot it and give it a fresh start, but it’s best to wait until the plant has adapted to your home conditions first. When you’re ready to repot, the best time is in the spring or early summer when the plant is actively growing.

Repotting Steps

Repotting your snake plant is easy if you follow these steps:

  • Prepare a new container with well-draining potting soil, such as a mix of potting loam, compost, and sharp sand.
  • Gently remove the plant from its container. If the soil is dry, you may have to soak the root ball for several minutes before you can remove it.
  • Trim off any large, dead roots with a sharp pair of scissors.
  • Put the trimmed root mass into the new container and fill the empty space with additional potting mix.
  • Water thoroughly and place the plant in a warm, bright location.

After repotting, it may take several weeks for your snake plant to adjust to its new home. Monitor the soil moisture closely and only water when the top 2 inches (5 cm) of soil has become dry.
