How to Fill & Use Gas Cans
Gas cans come in many shapes and sizes, but two main types are typically used today: steel and plastic. When using either type of gas can, proper safety measures should be taken. Learn how to fill and use gas cans in a safe and efficient manner.
Filling Up Steel Gas Cans
Before you start, make sure the gasoline can is approved and compliant with the government standards. This can usually be done by inspecting the bottom of the can for a label or stamp of approval. Now you're ready to fill up the can.
- Place the steel gas can in the upright position on a flat, level surface.
- Wipe off the container's neck to ensure it is clean and free of debris.
- Open the fuel valve on the gas pump by sliding it to the "on" position and wait for the nozzle to click off.
- Stick the gas nozzle into the opening of the gas can and give it a gentle squeeze to begin the flow of gas.
- When the can has been filled, carefully remove the nozzle. Do not slam or forcefully remove the nozzle, as this could result in spilling fuel.
- Close the fuel valve on the gas pump. Use caution to make sure all of the fuel is sealed inside the can.
Filling Up Plastic Gas Cans
Make sure the plastic gas can is approved by the government standards and is labeled accordingly. You're now ready to fill up the can.
- Place the plastic gas can in the upright position on a flat, level surface.
- Open the fuel valve on the gas pump by sliding it to the "on" position and wait for the nozzle to click off.
- Gently stick the gas nozzle into the opening of the gas can.
- When the can has been filled, carefully remove the nozzle. Do not slam or forcefully remove the nozzle, as this could result in spilling fuel.
- Close the fuel valve on the gas pump. Make sure all of the fuel is sealed inside the can.
Using Gas Cans Safely
When using a gas can, it is important to take all necessary safety precautions. Follow these tips for safe use:
- Always use the gas can outdoors in a well-ventilated area and away from any sources of heat or flame.
- Make sure you keep the can away from children or animals.
- Never smoke while handling a gas can or fuel.
- Never spill fuel on yourself or any other person or object.
- Be sure to use a gas buddy or suitably sized hose to transfer fuel to avoid splashback.
- If using a steel gas can, never place the can over a flame or heat source.
By following these simple steps, you can safely fill and use gas cans in no time.
