Using Salt to Clean Your Home
Salt has many uses beyond flavoring your dinner, including as a cleaning agent. You can use salt to deodorize, scrub, and clean a variety of surfaces in and around your home.
Deodorizing with Salt
- Mop up spills with salt to remove unpleasant odors.
- Repeat until the smell is no longer present.
- Sprinkle carpets with salt and let sit overnight. Vacuum the next morning for fresher-smelling carpets.
- For refrigerators and trash cans, fill a bowl with 3 parts salt and 1 part water. Dip a sponge in and wipe down the inside of the unit.
Cleaning with Salt
- Lightly moisten copper or brass items with water and sprinkle salt on them. Use a cloth to buff them lightly. This should remove tarnish and bring back the shine.
- If you have charred baking sheets, fill with salt and add a small amount of water. Scrub the mixture lightly over the blackened areas. Rinse the sheets with water and you should have a cleaner result.
- To remove grime from tile in the kitchen or bathroom, mix 1 teaspoon of salt with 1/2 cup of baking soda and 1/4 cup of white vinegar. Use a toothbrush to scrub the paste mixture into the grout.
