Erasing and Restoring Your MacBook Pro to Factory Settings

If you've decided that it's time to return to the factory settings of your MacBook Pro, this guide will walk you through the process. This reset will restore the system to its original configuration, wiping out all data and programs that you’ve added since then. You should always back up any of your important data before performing this reset.

Erasing Your Mac

You'll first want to erase your Mac before restoring it. This process will clean your Mac of all data and files:

  • Begin by taking your Mac to the Apple menu bar at the top, and then selecting Shut Down.
  • Once it shuts down, press the power button to turn the Mac back on.
  • As the Mac is starting up, press and hold the command and R keys to enter into the Mac's recovery mode.
  • Once in recovery mode, select Disk Utility from the list of options. Select your hard drive to the left, and click Erase in the top central part of the window.
  • Choose the Format you wish to use and click the Erase button.
  • Wait for the erasing process to finish, and then quit Disk Utility to reinstall your Mac.

Reinstalling Your Mac

Once your Mac has been erased, you’re ready to reinstall it from the internet or from a USB flash drive:

  • From the list of options in recovery mode, select Reinstall OSX and follow the prompts.
  • If you’re reinstalling from an internet connection, you’ll be prompted to connect to your wi-fi and then sign in with your Apple ID.
  • If you’re reinstalling using a USB flash drive, make sure it’s plugged in, select it from the list of options, and follow the prompts.

You Mac should now be reinstalled to its factory settings. Once the process is complete, you can begin customizing your Mac again. Good luck with your refreshed machine!
