Put Out a Cell Phone Fire

A cell phone fire can be a small fire, but a small fire can become large quickly, so it is important to take the steps necessary to put it out properly. By following these steps, you can make sure that the fire is extinguished quickly and that the damage is minimal.

Steps

  • Move your phone away from anything flammable. If you're using a phone case, remove it to make sure that the fire has no fuel to burn.
  • Cover the fire with a fire extinguisher, a metal pot or pan, or a sheet of paper. This will help to cut off the oxygen supply to the fire.
  • Do NOT pour water on an electronic fire. Water and electricity can be a deadly combination. Pouring water on a fire that involves a cellphone could result in electrocution, so it is important to not use water.
  • Leave the area immediately if the fire is not controlled. Don't try to extinguish the fire yourself if it is out of control. Instead, evacuate the area and call the fire department.
  • If the fire is out, unplug the device and remove the battery. If the device is still powered on, turn it off and unplug it.
  • Let the area cool down before attempting to touch the device again. If the phone is too hot to touch, leave it in an open, well-ventilated area.
  • Seek professional help for further advice. If the fire has caused extensive damage to the phone, seek help from a professional to assess the severity of the damage.
