How To Prevent Jaundice In Newborns

Jaundice is a common condition among newborns, but there are steps that parents and caregivers can take to reduce the risk of developing jaundice.

Instructions

  • Feed your infant regularly. Jaundice occurs when a newborn’s body is not able to break down a chemical called bilirubin. When your baby gets full and regular feedings, they excrete more bilirubin, preventing jaundice.
  • Initiate skin-to-skin contact. Skin-to-skin contact between the mother and the newborn will keep them warm and lower the chance of jaundice.
  • Encourage the baby to nurse. Research indicates that babies who nurse frequently may be less likely to develop jaundice. Try to keep the baby well-hydrated while breastfeeding.
  • Monitor the baby. Your pediatrician will check your baby’s jaundice levels during their initial checkup. Follow their instructions for regular monitoring.
  • Consult your doctor. Talk to your doctor if the jaundice persists for more than two weeks. Your doctor may recommend phototherapy or other treatments.
