How to Prevent Earwax Buildup

Properly managing earwax buildup can ensure good ear health and keep your hearing clear. Here are some tips on preventing excessive earwax:

  • Keep the ears dry. Water can soften earwax, which could encourage it to build up. Ensure that your ears are completely dry after showering, swimming, and other activities. If your ears do get wet, use a blow dryer set to its lowest setting to dry them off.
  • Clean the ears with a washcloth. This will help remove any excess wax in the ear canal. However, do not push the cloth too far in, as that can block the ear and block sound.
  • Try over-the-counter drops. If the buildup of earwax is excessive, over-the-counter earwax-dissolving drops can help remove it. When using these drops, read and follow the instructions carefully.
  • Avoid using cotton swabs or other objects. This is especially important for children, who may accidentally push wax deeper into the ear canal. Even adults should avoid sticking objects in their ears, as this can push wax further in and impact hearing.
  • Consult a doctor. If you are still having difficulty with earwax buildup, speak with a doctor. They can more easily remove the wax buildup and advise on ways to prevent it in the future.
