Making a Custom Guitar Strap – The Basics

Making a custom guitar strap is a great way to make your guitar easier to play and comfortable to wear. It can also add personality to your instrument and make it stand out from the crowd. With the right materials and a little know-how, making a custom guitar strap can be a rewarding project.

What You'll Need

  • Leather or heavy-duty fabric of your choice
  • Leather needles and thread
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • Measuring tape
  • Closures

Step 1: Measuring and Cutting

Measure around your chest, where the guitar strap will sit. Add 7-10 inches for tightness and comfort. Cut double the width of your final desired strap from your chosen material. Fold the material in half and cut it to the length you measured.

Step 2: Making the Strap Parts

  • Mark the inner sides of your strap pieces for closure placement.
  • Sew the closures to the marks on the inner parts of the straps.
  • Fold the straps so the raw edges are inside.
  • Sew the straplines together with the leather needle and thread.

Step 3: Finishing the Strap

  • Fold the raw edges of the straps inwards.
  • Trim and smooth the ends of the straps.
  • Reinforce all of the seams.

Your custom guitar strap should be ready for use now. Bear in mind that you may need to make minor adjustments if the strap doesn’t fit properly to ensure its comfort and function.
