Installing Linux on Your Chromebook

If you're looking to get the most out of your Chromebook, consider installing Linux on your device. Linux is a powerful, easy-to-use operating system which can greatly expand the functionality and capabilities of your Chromebook.

Steps to Install Linux on Your Chromebook

  1. Activate your Chromebook's Developer Mode. Developer Mode is a mode which allows customizable operating system modifications. You can activate it by pressing the ESC, REFRESH and POWER keys at the same time.

  2. Open the Windows Command Prompt and download the CloudReady program. The CloudReady program is a special version of Linux specifically designed for use with Chromebooks.

  3. Insert a USB drive into your Chromebook. You will need a drive of at least 16 GB to save your installation files.

  4. Using the CloudReady program, create an installationmedia file on your USB drive. This will allow your Chromebook to identify your drive and boot Linux from it.

  5. Reboot the Chromebook and press "Ctrl-L" when you see the blue screen. This will show you the boot menu for your Chromebook, and list your USB drive as one of the bootable options.

  6. Select your USB drive and let the installation script run. This will take some time, so sit back and wait for your Chromebook to finish.

  7. Once the installation is finished, you will see the welcome screen. Follow the on-screen instructions to create an account and select your settings. Once this is done, you will have successfully installed Linux on your Chromebook.
