Installing Debian in VirtualBox

Wondering how to install Debian in VirtualBox? Follow these 11 simple steps and you'll be ready to use Debian in a few minutes!

  1. Download VirtualBox from the official website and install it.
  2. Download a Debian ISO file of your choice from the official Debian website.
  3. Open VirtualBox and click “New”.
  4. In the pop-up window that appears, type in a name for your Virtual Machine and select “Linux” as the type and “Debian (64-bit)” as the version.
  5. Set the memory size, then click “Next”.
  6. Select “Create a virtual hard disk now” and click “Create”.
  7. Select “VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image)”, then click “Next”.
  8. Choose “Dynamically allocated”, then click “Next”. Select the disk size and click “Create”.
  9. Select your Virtual Machine (VM) from the left pane and click “Settings”.
  10. In the settings window, select the “Storage” tab. Select the “Empty” optical drive. Then, in the right pane, click the disc image icon to open a file picker window. Select the Debian ISO file you downloaded and click “Open.” Click “OK”.
  11. Click “Start” to boot up your VM. The installation process should begin automatically.
