How to Get Rid of Ground Ivy

Ground ivy is a fast-growing, aggressive weed. If left untreated, ground ivy can spread rapidly, crowding out desirable plants and creating an eyesore. Fortunately, there are a few methods you can use to get rid of this stubborn weed.

Steps to Take

  • Dig the ground ivy out. Use a shovel or garden hoe to pull out as much of the weed as possible. Be sure to dig deep enough to remove the ivy and its taproot.
  • Use herbicides. Glyphosate-containing weed killers are effective for controlling ground ivy. Always follow the directions on the herbicide label.
  • Prevent regrowth by applying corn gluten meal. Corn gluten meal is a natural herbicide and fertilizer that inhibits the growth of young plants but won’t harm established plants. Apply according to package instructions.
  • Cultivate the area regularly. Ivy seeds can stay dormant for several years, so they’re nearly impossible to eradicate. To prevent regrowth, cultivate the area every few weeks and pull out any newly sprouted weeds.
  • Cover ground ivy with mulch. Mulching with 3- to 4-inches of organic material, such as shredded bark, leaves or straw, helps smother existing plants and is effective for preventing new ground ivy plants.
