How to Forget Hurtful Words

Emotional pain caused by hurtful words can linger long after the initial hurt. Learn to reset your attitude and find the right tools to move on with your life.

Instructions

  • Set an intention. Understand that it is possible to process and heal from emotional pain.
  • Don't dwell on it. It's natural to be upset in the face of hurtful words, but it’s best to try to move past it and not dwell in it.
  • Envision a positive future. Picture yourself having an awesome life in spite of the hurtful words.
  • Surround yourself with supportive people. Build an emotional support network, seek out friends and family who won't judge or think of you in terms of those hurtful words.
  • Write or talk it out. Acknowledge the hurt by confiding in someone you trust and feel comfortable with. Or, take a page out of your journal and jot down your thoughts to help process your emotions.
  • Shift your focus. Replace those hurtful words with statements of support, appreciation, wisdom or encouragement.
  • Practice meditation or mindfulness. Accept that these hurtful words are part of your story and learn to appreciate the unique perspective you have gained fromthem.
  • Visit a counsellor or therapist. A professional can help you work through unresolved emotions and build a healthier emotional outlook in the future.
  • Forgive the speaker. The hurt from someone's words can linger for decades, but forgiving can help you move on and reclaim your sense of self.
