How to Cook Asparagus on the Stove

Asparagus makes a nutritious and delicious side dish. It's so easy to prepare, too - with just a few simple steps, you'll be enjoying your asparagus in no time.

  1. Gather your ingredients. You'll need asparagus, butter, salt, pepper, and garlic (optional).
  2. Break off the ends of the asparagus. Trim off the woody parts at the bottom of the stalks, and discard them.
  3. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Melt your butter in the pan. Once the butter has melted, add your asparagus to the pan.
  4. Sprinkle your asparagus with salt and pepper, and add the garlic, if desired. Stir the asparagus in the butter to coat.
  5. Cook the asparagus for 5 – 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it is tender and cooked through. If you like your asparagus more crunchy, you can cook it for less time.
  6. Remove the asparagus from the skillet and serve warm.
