How to Screen Capture to File Using VLC

VLC Player is one of the most versatile media players available and allows you to capture the screen’s contents as either a picture or video. Here’s a step-by-step guide to screen capture with VLC:

  1. Open VLC media player.
  2. Go to View – > Advanced Controls. This opens a new set of controls in a toolbar at the bottom of the player.
  3. Click the red record button located in the Advanced Controls toolbar.
  4. Begin capturing the screen. To capture a video, you can also initiate recording from the Media menu by selecting Convert/Save. This opens a dialog box that allows you to record a selection or the entire screen.
  5. Once complete, select the Stop button in the Advanced Controls to end the capture.
  6. A file called “vlcsnap” appears in the default installation directory of VLC.
