How to De‐Ice Your Windshield

In the midst of winter, it’s possible for your windshield to become fully or partially iced over. As it can be dangerous to drive with impaired visibility, you’ll need to deice it as quickly as possible. Here are some steps you can take to deice your windshield:

  • Start by scraping off as much ice as you can with a plastic ice scraper.
  • If the ice is too thick, you can spray a deicer onto the glass. Alternatively, you can use a container of lukewarm water to slowly drip onto the windshield.
  • If warm water doesn’t work, you can try boiling water. When using boiling water, proceed with caution. Make sure you pour it slowly to avoid cracking the glass.
  • Once the ice is mostly gone, you can then use the plastic scraper to remove the remaining ice.

Should the weather be too cold and the windshield is completely frozen, you will have to wait for the temperature to warm up or use an external defroster. Keep in mind, the external defroster will likely take a longer time to work.

De-ice Your Windshield Quickly And Effectively

Frosty weather can really put a dent in your morning routine. Fortunately, you can de-ice your windshield quickly and easily, and be on your way in no time.

Instructions

  1. Pour warm water over the frosted windshield. Make sure the water is warm, not hot. Hot water can cause glass to crack.
  2. Scrape away the frost using a scraper or some other non-sharp object, such as a credit card. Start from the top and work your way down.
  3. Turn on your defroster with the fan set to low or medium, then turn off your windshield wipers. This will help to rapidly de-ice the glass.
  4. Turn your rear defroster on, if available. This will speed up the de-icing process by helping to evenly spread the heat across the windshield.

Once the windshield has de-iced, make sure to clean it with a glass cleaner and a soft rag to ensure that it's completely clear.
