How to Make and Customize Your Own DIY Candles

Making your own candles is a great way to get creative and add a touch of personal style to your home. With the right supplies and a little bit of know-how, you can be crafting custom candles in no time. Follow these steps to learn how to make and customize your own DIY candles.

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

To make your own candles, you’ll need a few simple supplies, which you can find at a local craft store or online. The essential supplies you'll need for nearly any type of candle are:

  • Wax – You’ll need wax, which comes in many different types and colors. Beeswax, paraffin, and soy wax are three of the most popular types. Pick the type of wax you want and buy enough to fill the volume of the container you plan to use for your finished candle.
  • Wick – Every candle needs a wick. You can buy special pre-waxed wicks, or you can use unwaxed wicks and dip them in melted wax to make them easier to work with.
  • Containers – Candles can be made in almost any kind of heat-resistant container, from mason jars to pretty tea cups. Be sure to check the volume of the container before buying the amount of wax you need.
  • Fragrance oils – If you want your candle to have scent, you’ll need to add fragrance oil. Fragrance oil typically comes in scent-specific bottles that can be added to the hot wax.
  • Double boiler or melting pot – You will need a heat-safe container to hold your wax. An old pot or a double boiler pot is perfect for this.

Step 2: Melt Your Wax

The first step to making a candle is melting the wax. Begin by filling your double boiler or melting pot up halfway with water, and place it on the stove to heat up. Measure out the amount of wax you need, and put it in a heat-resistant bowl. Now place the bowl in the heated pot or double boiler and the wax will slowly melt.

Step 3: Prepare Your Wick and Container

While wax is melting, prepare the container and wick. Cut the wick to the desired length and attach it to a wick holder. Place one end of the wick in the center of the container you plan to use for the candle. Make sure the wick is straight, and attach the other end to a pencil or chopstick and place it across the top of the container. This will keep the wick straight as the wax cools.

Step 4: Add Fragrance and Color

Once the wax has completely melted, you can add any scents or colors you want. Add fragrance oil drops to the melted wax, according to the amount specified on the bottle of fragrance oil. You can also add a few drops of food coloring or candle dye to the wax to give it color. Stir the wax with a spoon to distribute the scents and colors.

Step 5: Pour the Wax

Once you’ve added fragrance oil and dyes, it’s time to pour the wax. Carefully pour the wax into the container, and let it cool for at least an hour. Once the wax has cooled, trim the extra wick.

Step 6: Customize Your Candle

After your candle is finished, you can customize it however you like. You can add decorations like stickers, ribbons, or glitter, or even wrap the container in pretty paper. You can also make multiple pillar candles with the same wax and add additional scents and colors to each one. With a few extra supplies and a little creativity, you can make countless candles with unique designs.
