Help Your Parents See That Your Friends are Good People

If you're worried that your parents don't approve of your close friends, try these tips to help them see the good that exists in these relationships.

  1. Be honest with your parents about your friends. Explain to them why you like spending time with them and what values and interests you have in common.
  2. Invite your friends to spend time at your house. This gives your parents a chance to meet your friends and form opinions without the distraction of other people or places.
  3. Show your parents that trust you in your decisions about the people you choose to associate with. Gently point out that your parents chose their own friends and that they should trust your judgment as well.
  4. Demonstrate respect for your parents’ values. Remind them that you respect their opinion and that you will not put yourself in a dangerous situation.
  5. Listen to your parents’ concerns. Understand where they’re coming from and try to remove some of their fear by providing thoughtful, honest answers.
  6. Remind your parents that spending time with your friends can actually be good for you. Friends can provide emotional and moral support, perspective, and a fun outlet away from parental control.
