E. coli is a bacterium that commonly reside in the gut of warm-blooded organisms. E. coli 0157: H7 produces Shiga toxin which causes severe foodborne infections. Other strains of E. coli lead to respiratory infections such pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and other diseases like meningitis.

According to Brazier (2017), there is no treatment for E. coli bacterium. Taking antibiotics might increase the risk of HUS. Instead, patients should drink plenty of water and get enough rest to remedy the problem.
