The lymphatic system is a series of lymphatic vessels and nodes which carry a white fluid called lymph round the body. Lymph contains white blood cells called lymphocytes and has other constituents similar to blood plasma, like proteins, fats and carbohydrates.

The lymph vessels carry lymph from the extremities of the body where it leaves the blood stream, back to the neck, where it rejoins the blood in major arteries.

Inevitably in its journey lymph picks up waste materials that it needs to be rid of. These are filtered out in the lymph nodes.
