Treating Hot Spots in Dogs

Hot spots, or acute moist dermatitis, can be an uncomfortable and potentially painful experience for your beloved pup. With the right treatment, however, you can get your pup back to their usual playful self in no time.

Steps for Treatment

  • The first step is to shave the affected area, which can be done at home or by your veterinarian. This is to help keep the spot dry.
  • Clean the area using warm water and antibacterial soap. Make sure to get any products your veterinarian may have recommended for you.
  • Pat the area dry and make sure to only use warm water.
  • Apply a medicated ointment, gel, or spray to reduce inflammation, itchiness, and reduce the risk of infection.
  • Keep an eye on the affected area and observe for any improvement or worsening of symptoms.
  • Have your pup wear a protective collar in order to prevent them from licking or biting the affected area.
  • Visit your veterinarian for further advice or treatment if necessary.
