Properly Storing Your Stethoscope

Stethoscopes are medical instruments used by nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals. With regular use and care, your stethoscope can last for many years. Proper storage is essential to ensure its longevity and to help protect it from damage.

Instructions

  • Clean your stethoscope by removing the headset and bell or diaphragm with a non-abrasive liquid soap and warm water.
  • Wipe down the chest piece, specific acoustic parts of the headset, tube and ear tips with a cloth.Wash the bell or diaphragm with the same mixture.
  • Rinse off the chest piece, tube, ear tips and bell or diaphragm with water.
  • Dry the stethoscope in a lint-free cloth.
  • Check top and bottom tubing for dirt and sand grain buildup. Remove by wiping and cleaning if needed.
  • Before putting your stethoscope away, press the ear tips together so that the stethoscope is fully closed and store it away safely.
  • Most stethoscopes come with a protective carrying case to store your stethoscope, making it easier to transport and to keep the instrument safe from dirt and dust build-up.
