How to Square Dance (Basic Steps)

Square dancing is a social activity accessible to all ages and skill levels. Whether you’re joining a group, taking lessons, or just curious to learn about the popular pastime, here’s a quick rundown of a few easy moves to help you on your journey.

Step 1: The Alamo

The Alamo position is the beginning of all square dances. Stand in a squared formation, facing a partner, with four couples total. All four will take hands along the center of the square, as if you’re stretching out the walls of the room.

Step 2: Do-Si-Do

The well-known Do-Si-Do is the cornerstone of many square dance moves. Facing a partner, step to the side, passing each other. The lead dancer will then extend their hand, and take the opposite hand of their partner. This will allow each couple to pass by the other.

Step 3: Weave the Ring

In the Weave the Ring move, the four couples will start with hands joined in a circle. The lead dancer will instruct one couple at a time to take hands and walk towards the center. This will be done in alternating circles and will eventually form another Alamo-style square.

Step 4: Promenade

The Promenade is essentially a dance procession. Taking the lead, the couple will move around the square by stepping forward and turning a half (180 degree) turn. The other couples will follow this lead, forming a continuous circle.
