How to Pull a Deep Well Submersible Pump

If you have a deep well submersible pump, and it must be pulled from the well, the procedure can be done easily with a few steps and basic safety precautions.

Steps:

1. Determine the Reason for Pulling the Pump- Before doing any work, turn off the power and determine why the pump needs to be pulled. Is it broken, clogged, or making unusual noises? Once you diagnose the problem, you can proceed with pulling the pump.
2. Make Sure the Pressure Is Off- Safety is a priority. Be sure the power to the pump is off. Unplug and lockout the electricity, and turn off the pressure switch. You’ll need to drain and depressurize the system before you can pull the submerged pump.
3. Attach a Pulley- Now you’re ready to make the pump easier to pull up from the deep well. Attach a heavy-duty pulley, such as the kind used in boat hoists, to the rope or cable above the well, so you have something to pull on.
4. Hook Up Enough Rope or Cable- Attach the rope or cable around the pump’s discharge and tank tees. The pulley may help you wind the rope or cable if it is deep enough. Make sure you have enough rope or cable to pull the pump up from the well.
5. Label All the Wires- Once the rope or cable is secure, label all the wires from the power source. This way, you can connect them in the exact same order when you get the pump back down the well.
6. Put on Safety Gear- Now that all the important steps are taken, it’s time to ensure you stay safe. Wear safety glasses, a hard hat, non-slip shoes, and other protective equipment that’s appropriate to the situation and job.
7. Start Pulling - When everything is connected and labeled, it’s time to begin the pull. Have a few helpers stand by to assist, and be aware of the sharp edges of the pipe. The rope or cable must be pulled in one steady motion until the pump is up and out of the deep well.

It may take some time to get the pump up, but with the right safety gear and procedures, soon enough the deep well submersible pump can be safely and successfully pulled.
