Painting Vinyl Records with Acrylic Paint

If you’re tired of trying to find a unique gift for the music lover in your life, why not consider painting a vinyl record? Before you start, choose a design that you think the recipient of your gift would like. You can use standard acrylic paint to paint on the vinyl's surface. Keep reading to learn how to paint vinyl records with the use of acrylic paint.

Instructions:

  1. Before you begin, make sure you have all the materials you need for the project. You will need: acrylic paint, paintbrushes, a cup of water, and a vinyl record.
  2. Thoroughly clean the surface of the vinyl record. Use a damp cloth and let it air dry completely.
  3. Once the record is dry, lightly sand it with a piece of fine-grit sandpaper. This will help to make the surface of the vinyl smoother and easier to paint on.
  4. Lay out your design or just go with the flow. Dip your paint brush into the acrylic paint and lightly apply your design onto the clean and dry vinyl record surface.
  5. When you are finished with the painting, use the cup of water and the paintbrush to blend the colors together where needed. Let the record dry completely.
  6. Continue with the same process on the other side of the vinyl record. Let it dry fully before flipping the record over and removing any paper stencils you used.

Sealing the Vinyl Record

To make sure your painted vinyl record will last, you will need to seal it. Acrylic sealant can be used to protect the paint from fading. Be sure to choose a sealant that is intended for use on vinyl records.

  1. Completely cover the vinyl record with the sealant. Be sure to use a very light layer; you don’t want to leave any puddles or thick spots on the vinyl as this could damage the record.
  2. Let the sealant dry completely before you begin to use the record.

Using Sprays and Special Effects

For even more unique designs, you can use spray paint, as well as other supplies. Feel free to experiment with glitter, rhinestones, and other items to make your painted record stand out.

  1. Once you have your design in place, lay out the record and begin to spray. Hold the can about 8-10 inches away from the record while spraying. Move the can from side to side to create a thin and even layer.
  2. For a different look, you can also brush on the spray paint.
  3. Once you are happy with the design, seal the record with the acrylic sealant.
