How to Move a Mobile Home for Free (or Closer to Free)

Relocating a mobile home can be expensive, but there are ways to do so for free or closer to free. You need the right tools and safety equipment, and some luck can go a long way too. With a little patience and planning, you can make your mobile home move happen for a fraction of the cost.

Step One: Plan Your Trip

Before you can move your mobile home, you need a plan. Consider how far the move is, the cost of permits, safety precautions, and any other special instructions or regulations for moving homes. Also think about what kind of transport you’ll need – will you need a tow truck, tractor, or something else? Having a plan will make the move go smoother.

Step Two: Gather Your Supplies and Safety Equipment

For a safe and successful move, you’ll need plenty of supplies and safety equipment. At the very least, you’ll need:

  • Truck or tractor to tow your home
  • High-strength ratchet straps
  • Ramps, if needed
  • Safety vests and goggles
  • Chocks and wheel blocks
  • Specialized tools for your hitch/software
  • Hoisting equipment

Step Three: Get the Word Out

Once you have all the materials and equipment for the move, spread the word. Try to find someone who can help you out for free or for a discounted rate. Craigslist and community message boards are a great way to connect with people who can lend a hand. If you are lucky, you might find someone with a tow truck or tractor who is willing to help out in exchange for something like food, drinks, or even a small fee.

Step Four: Move Your Mobile Home

Finally, it’s time to move your mobile home. Make sure you have enough people (at least four) to help with the move. Also, double check that all of your supplies and safety equipment are in place and that the home is securely attached to your transport vehicle. Once everything is ready, slowly and carefully move your home to its new location.

Step Five: Stay Alert and Be Prepared

As you move, be on the lookout for any obstacles that could make the move dangerous. And above all else, keep your family and the people you’re working with safe. If something seems off, stop the move immediately and assess the situation.

Step Six: Secure Your Home in Place

Once your home is in position, you’ll need to secure it in place. Depending on the type of tie-downs or foundation you use, you may be able to do this with large cinder blocks and heavy-duty screws. Make sure that your home is securely fastened and that any necessary permits have been taken care of.

Step Seven: Celebrate

Congratulations! You did it! Now that your mobile home is safely in a new location, go ahead and celebrate your success. You did all the hard work – now is the time to relax and enjoy your new home.
