How to Make a Balloon‐Powered Boat
Making a balloon-powered boat is an easy way to have fun with the power of air. By inflating a balloon, attaching it to a boat, and releasing it in water, you can make the boat move—no coasting or rowing required!
Instructions
- Gather your materials. You'll need scissors, a balloon, two straws, tape, a plastic bottle, a plastic spoon, a skewer, and a piece of Styrofoam.
- Cut the bottle in half. The top part will be the boat’s hull and the bottom part will be the motor.
- Take the two straws and tape them to the hull with the ends sticking out. The straws should be spaced an inch apart and pointing the same direction.
- Screw the skewer into the hull. This will serve as the rudder — the steering component of the boat.
- Bring the two straws together at their ends so they touch and create an "X" shape. Connect and hold them in place with the plastic spoon.
- Wedge the Styrofoam onto the spoon, pushing it up against the straws.
- Inflate the balloon and tie it off. Make sure it is not too full or the boat won't work properly.
- Attach the balloon to the "X" of straws and spoon, with the balloon pointing towards the stern of the boat. Tape the balloon in place, if needed.
- Place your boat into the water.
- Release the balloon and watch your boat go!
