How to orient Google Maps to North

No matter if you're preparing for a lengthy car journey or just checking out the geography of a far-off location, getting Google Maps oriented to North is fairly simple.

To orient Google Maps to North, follow these steps:

  1. Open up Google Maps on your mobile device or computer. If you're using the mobile app, you may need to sign in with your Google account.
  2. On the mobile app, tap the three-line menu icon in the top left-hand corner of the screen to open the side menu.
  3. Scroll down in the side menu until you find the ‘Compass Mode‘ option.
  4. Tap the 'Compass Mode' option to enable the feature. The Maps will now be oriented to North.

If you’re using a desktop computer, the ‘Compass Mode’ option will appear at the top right-hand corner of the Maps window. Click on this option to enable ‘Compass Mode’.

Once you've got Compass Mode enabled, you should notice a circle with directions located beside the zoom bar in the bottom left-hand corner of the map. These directions represent North, South, East and West.
