How to Search for Old Emails in Gmail

Your Gmail inbox can quickly become filled with hundreds of emails, making it hard to find an old message. Fortunately, Gmail includes an array of powerful options for searching your current and past emails to help you locate exactly what you're looking for.

Desktop

Follow these steps to search for old emails in Gmail on your desktop computer:

  1. Open Gmail in your web browser.
  2. At the top of the page, click the search bar, which reads "Search Mail."
  3. Enter your search criteria into the search bar. You can can search for any term related to what you're looking for, such as an email sender, a keyword contained in the email, or a subject line.
  4. Press Enter to submit your query.
  5. Gmail will display a list of all emails containing your search term.

Mobile

If you need to search for old emails in Gmail on your mobile device, use these steps:

  1. Open the Gmail app on your device.
  2. Tap the magnifying glass icon in the top-right corner of the page.
  3. Type your search terms into the search bar at the top of the page.
  4. Tap the blue search icon in the bottom-right corner of the page.
