How to Dry and Store Wood Chips for Your Smoker or Barbeque
Using wood chips as fuel for a smoker or barbeque is a great way to add extra flavor to your outdoor cooking. As with anything else, however, drying and storing the wood chips correctly can make a huge difference in your food's taste. Here's the best way to dry and store the wood chips for your smoker or barbeque.
Steps
- Allow the chips to dry naturally. Place the wood chips in the sun or in a dry, warm place. Spread them out in one layer for maximum exposure, and turn them once or twice a day. Allow the chips to dry for approximately two weeks.
- Store the chips until you are ready to use them. Place the wood chips in a resealable plastic bag or bag made out of breathable material like fabric or cheesecloth. Seal it up, and then store the chips in a cool, dry place until you use them.
- Soak the wood chips before using. Before you use the chips to cook, soak them in water for a few hours. This ensures the chips burn slower while you cook, releasing that smoky flavor that makes barbequed food so delicious!
