Charging a Prius battery is a process that requires several steps and special tools. Follow these steps to successfully charge your Prius battery:

  1. Obtain a compatible Prius router/charger.
  2. Locate the data link connector (DLC) on the Prius.
  3. Connect the charger to the data link connector (DLC).
  4. Attach the charger to a 110/120V power source
  5. Start the Prius and let the car idle for about 20 minutes.

Once the car has been idling for about 20 minutes, the charger should indicate that it is charging the battery. Some models may require more than 20 minutes.

  3. Disconnect the red and black connectors by pressing the release button on the connectors.
  4. Connect the charger to the car’s battery with the clamps, red first then black.
  5. Plug the charger into its power source. Most chargers have a power button on the charger, switch it on.
  6. Set the charge rate on the charger. Consult with the owner’s manual to determine the recommended rate.
  7. Monitor the charge current. The charge current should not exceed the car maker’s recommended maximum.
  8. Wait for the charging process to finish. Make sure to reset the charge rate if needed when nearing full charge.
  9. Unplug the power source and remove the clamps. Reconnect the connectors.
  10. Re-engage the electronic steering, brakes, and other systems.
