How to Bleach Dye a Sweatshirt

Adding a stylish cord-tied, bleach dyed look to a plain, old sweatshirt is easy! All you need is bleach, gloves, rubber bands, and your chosen color of fabric dye or spray paint. Follow the instructions below, and in no time you'll have a shirt with a creative mod design!

Step 1: Pre-washing the Sweatshirt

Before beginning the process, it is important to pre-wash the sweatshirt. This step ensures the bleach will maintain its color for the longest period.

Step 2: Tying and Pinning the Sweatshirt

Fold the sweatshirt in half and secure it with rubber bands or clothespins. This will help the dye settle in evenly when applied.

Step 3: Applying Bleach

Wear gloves to protect your hands, then mix the bleach according to the instructions of the product you purchased. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and spray it over the areas of the sweatshirt which you wish to bleach. Make sure to keep the spray bottle far away from your skin.

Step 4: Changing the Color of the Shirt

Once the shirt has bleached to your desired color, rinse it and put it in the washing machine. After washing, dry the shirt and apply your chosen color of fabric dye or spray paint to transform the design.

Step 5: Finishing the Project

Cool the shirt in cold water and hang it up to air dry. Depending on the design you chose, you may wish to add embellishments such as beads, sequins, or extra fabric to the shirt. If so, make sure to attach them securely.

Step 6: Enjoying Your Customized Sweatshirt

Now it's time to show off your fashionable, personalized shirt! Enjoy your new look, knowing that it was all created by you!
