Bleaching Colored Clothes the Right Way

Bleaching colored clothes can be a great way to revitalize a favorite piece of clothing. However, bleaching colored clothing incorrectly can ruin the garment. Here are some tips to ensure that you bleach colored clothing the right way:

  • Check the care label on the clothing. It should have instructions for bleaching in the event you choose to do so.
  • If the care label has ‘no bleach’ or a similar warning, do not bleach the garment.
  • If the care label allows you to use bleach, it is important to know the type of bleach the garment can be exposed to. It might be chlorine bleach or an oxygen bleach.
  • If the care label says chlorine bleach, use sodium hypochlorite or a chlorine-based bleach.
  • If the care label says oxygen bleach, use a hydrogen peroxide-based bleach.
  • Be sure to always check the garment for colorfastness before bleaching. Test in an inconspicuous area such as in the seam or cuff.
  • Mix 1-2 tablespoons of the appropriate bleach with a gallon of lukewarm water in a washing machine or sink.
  • Submerge the garment for 3-5 minutes.
  • Rinse the garment thoroughly after immersing it in the bleach solution.
  • To ensure that all the bleach is flushed out, double or triple rinse the fabric.
  • When all the bleach has been removed, add detergent and wash the garment as usual.
  • Hang the garment to dry or tumble dry on low. Do not wring the garment to dry.
