Ripping DVDs with VLC Media Player

VLC Media Player is a free, open source, and cross-platform video player that supports DVD discs. You can also use it to rip DVD content to audio and video files. Follow the steps below to learn how to rip DVDs with VLC media player.

PC Steps

  1. Download and install VLC Media Player if you haven’t already.
  2. Insert the disc you want to rip into your computer’s DVD drive.
  3. Open VLC Media Player, click Media tab at the top of the window, and select Convert/Save.
  4. In the Open Media window, click the Disc tab and select the DVD disc as your media source.
  5. Click the Convert/Save button at the bottom of the window.
  6. In the Destination file box, enter a file name for the video you’re about to rip.
  7. Select the file type you want to rip the video to—it’ll most likely be MP4, AVI, or MOV.
  8. Click the Start button to begin ripping the DVD video.
  9. Once it’s done, click the Stop button and your ripped DVD will be saved to your computer.

Mac Steps

  1. Download and install VLC Media Player if you haven’t already.
  2. Insert the disc you want to rip into your computer’s DVD drive.
  3. Open VLC Media Player, click File tab at the top of the window, and select Convert/Stream.
  4. In the Open Media window, click the Disc tab and select the DVD disc as your media source.
  5. Click the Convert/Stream button at the bottom of the window.
  6. In the Destination file box, enter a file name for the video you’re about to rip.
  7. Select the file type you want to rip the video to—it’ll most likely be MP4, AVI, or MOV.
  8. Click the Start button to begin ripping the DVD video.
  9. Once it’s done, click the Stop button and your ripped DVD will be saved to your computer.
