How to Make Shoes
Making your own shoes can be a time consuming and rewarding process. With the right materials and tools, you can make a quality pair of custom shoes that you’ll be proud of. Here’s what you’ll need to get started:
- Leather, cloth or synthetics materials for the upper
- A mixture of cotton and foam for the insole
- Bonded leather or synthetic material for the outsole
- Leather laces
- Paste for the heel
- Shoemaking tools like a slicker, awl, awl guard, burnisher, scissors, hammer, palm punch, eyelet tools, and edge slicker
Once you have all of your materials, you can begin the process. Here’s how to make your own shoes:
- Prepare the upper material. Cut the material for the upper of the shoe and trim off any excess material. Be sure to make allowances for the seams and welts.
- Attach the insole. Cut the insole from cotton and foam material, and glue it to the bottom of the upper portion of the shoe.
- Attach the outsole. Use adhesive to glue the outsole layer onto the bottom of the insole.
- Assemble the footplate. Fit the footplate into the shoe and attach it to the outsole.
- Cut and sew the uppers. Sew the uppers together with a sewing machine and attach lace eyelets to both sides.
- Make the heel. Make the heel of the shoe from a combination of molded and cut pieces. Glue the pieces together with paste glue.
- Attach the heel. Glue the heel of the shoe to the sole with paste glue.
- Finishing touches. Finishing touches, like burnishing the edges, are important to make your shoes look professional.
When your shoes are complete, wear them proudly and show off the hard work you’ve done! You can also customize them any way you’d like – whether it’s with a different color or texture – to make them truly your own.
