How to Sanitize and Clean Thrifted Shoes

Thrifting can be a great way to find unique pieces at a discount, but it also exposes you to the additional risk of bringing home germs from other peoples’ former possessions. Cleaning and sanitizing thrifted shoes before you wear them is a step worth taking to ensure you are comfortable and protected against any potential contaminants.

Steps For Sanitizing and Cleaning Thrifted Shoes

  1. Check for visible damage. Look for any holes, rips, or signs of excessive wear that could indicate the shoe has degraded too far to be safely worn.
  2. Clean the outside. Take a brush and use water and soap to scrub away dirt, salt residue, marks, and other debris. Concentrate on all the areas where shoe strings, laces, or fit adjusters are present.
  3. Wash the interior of the shoe. If the shoe is machine-washable, run it through a cycle using the appropriate settings. Otherwise, insert a cloth or sponge soaked in a warm, soapy water into the interior and rub it around the shoe to remove surface dirt and scuffs.
  4. Sanitize the surface with antibacterial wipes. Use a disinfectant wipe to clean down the entire exterior of the shoe, paying close attention to any area with fur, fabric, or leather. These surfaces may have trapped bacteria so additional sanitizing is necessary.
  5. Allow the shoe to dry. Once the shoe is scrubbed, wiped, and rinsed off, place it in a well-ventilated area and leave it to dry.
  6. Wear with pride. When the shoe is completely dry, it’s ready for you to enjoy and wear with confidence.
